2009 seemed to be the “Year of the Baby” amongst my friends and coworkers so many of the things I knitted were baby related.

One of the two pink baby bear hats that I made this year.

A baby panda bear hat

I finally finished that blue baby sweater that had be “in progress” for quite some time.

A pair of baby boxing gloves.

A set of matching baby booties.

One of two baby blankets I made this year.

A colorful baby bonnet.

I made this beaded strawberry hat along with a watermelon hat but I forgot to get a picture of that before it was gifted.

The second star blanket I made.

And finally the froggy baby hat.

This will probably be the last year I knit baby items for coworkers.

From now on it is family only.

Hats

Hats! My love of hats is no secret so of course I had to make as many as I could. Many of these are now staples in my wardrobe.

This however is not one of them. The hat looks pretty good in this photo but from most angles I look like I am wearing a puffy pastery chef hat. It is because I used a yarn that was too thick and made for a stiff fabric. Next time I would use either a thinner yarn or a softer yarn to avoid that problem.

I love this hat but it is too small for me. I’ve ripped the project with the intent of going back someday to reknit it in a bigger size.

The Trinity hat however was too large. I’ve since frogged it and reused it in a different hat. If I did this one again I would knit some elastic into the brim.

This hat turned out quite well with the use of some sock yarn that had been in my stash forever.

This is one of the two patterns that I knit from “Boutique Knits”. It is one of my favorite hats.

The Princess Leia bun hat proved to be quite popular at last years departmental holiday party as a white elephant gift.

My second hat from “Boutique Knits” and the project I reused the yarn from the Trinity hat with. Another one of my favorites that gets worn a lot. The fabric created from a comination of the yarn and stitch makes a wonderfully cosy hat.

This hat get a lot of everyday wear as well. The cheery yellow yarn is a nice pop of color on a cold gray day.

A bit snug on me but I love the way the top of this hat looks.

The white elephant gift that I knit for this years departmental holiday party. It also proved to be quite popular.

A hat that I made as a gift for a Stars fan. I tried to dye the yarn but I couldn’t find the stuff I usually use. The color didn’t really take but I may redye the hat for her at a later time.

My scarf/shawl and one of my all time favorite projects. I used undyed alpaca for this project and the result was a super warm and super soft project that was so easy to make yet looks super complicated. I chose to leave the ends unbraided and I twisted the stitches before and after each drop stitch section.

Another one that looks harder than it was. This was simply a lengthwise seed stitch scarf with the Noro color changes doing most of the heavy lifting.

A cute use of the teeny tiny balls of cashmere that I own.

Sweater

This pattern was on my “to do” list from the moment I saw it. I bought the pattern and the yarn but it took me a year to get around to starting it then another year to really get to work on it. After several months of knitting I finished it and steeked it. I wish I had made the top part about 2 inches shorter but it is otherwise a fantastic project.

It only took 3 months this time! A new record for me with Lace. I did the Revontuli-huivi shawl but with a much thinner yarn than was called for and with an an extra 4 repeats of the chart. I love the colors of the JoJoland Harmony yarn and the most amazing thing? It only took 1 ball to make this.

I'm Back! Knitting timeline included

I decided it was time to catch up on my knitting posts. The list of items that I wanted to write about kept growing and growing so I'm going to catch myself up by posting a bare bones version of what I've been up to since my last the last time I was here.

Mid to late February

- My beret ended up being too tight so I will eventually cast this on again with a larger needle and more stitches. I really like the way the color of the yarn compliments the stitch pattern. I'm looking forward to completing this one. Hat based of the moss stitch beret.

March

- With a double strand of worsted weight yarn I was able to crochet this hat in one day. Whoo-hoo! I seemed to have been in a purple phase at this time because suddenly I was making a slew of purple projects. I never seem to notice that I'm doing this until after the fact.

- As soon as I'm finished with my current lace project I intend to take this up again. The Juno Regina is such a lovely pattern and the color I bought for it (Crushed Velvet in silk lace) is amazing. I probably won't be very faithful to it but I think it deserves more attention that it has been receiving (none) in the last few months.

- My test swatches for the Eunny Jang Endpaper mitts have led me to the conclusion that I need to knit this in two solid colors. Solid with a varigated just wasn't working for me.

- Yet another purple hat. I crocheted this for a friend's birthday.

April

- This poor yarn has been frogged so often I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. A hand warmer, then a sock, then back to a hand warmer. In the picture it was going to be a spiral bed sock but then it was turning into a spiral arm warmer. I haven't decided what if anything I plan to do with this. The colors are gorgeous though.

- This hand warmer is still on the needles with only the thumb needing to be completed. As it gets colder I'm sure I'll find the motivation to complete it and its future sister.

- A crochet scarf from the Happy Hooker

- My completed Noro socks. The first sock had a sudden color change with a knot so it made matching the second sock more difficult to match up. I really love the Noro colors and have since stocked up on several colorways for future projects.

May

- Another crochet beret. This was a bit too tight so I plan on going back and adding more increases.

- The Eunny Jang Entrelac sock in progress with more Noro.

- A "They Call Them Pirates" hat for my Dad.

June

- I decided to skip the seaming that was going to make this into a stockinette tube scarf.

July

- A test baby bootie. I couldn't figure this pattern out from reading it so I tried it using scrap yarn. You may see the real version somewhere down the line.

- I've been working on this lace shawl since March but I've only included the latest picture. I bought 2 balls of Jojoland Harmony for this but it is looking like it will only take one to complete this project.

- Trellis baby sweater from Knitty for a coworker.

- Another project I'm calling time on. Instead of a long one I'm leaving this as a scarflette. If I want to add more it will be easy enough with crochet.

- A mindless TV knitting project made out of some dreamy soft alpaca.

The year so far....

December 31st I made several resolutions regarding my knitting. More than a month later this is my progress.

It took me less than a month to break knitting resolution #1. Sometimes I just can’t seem to help myself. I wondered if it would be a good idea to do a modular scarf in such a lightweight yarn but seeing the Modern Quilt Wrap showed me it could be done. The scarf doesn’t seem to use up much yarn and it is a great way to use up partial skeins of KSH.

I did manage to fulfill one part of knitting resolution #2. I finished a project that I had started the previous year. It is a small project but baby steps aren’t a bad thing.

Pro: I finally frogged and re-knit the top portion of my pink Fake Isle hat. Yay!
Con: The new looser gauge I knit at left the hat so big that I have to fold up the brim. Boo!
I refuse to try to untangle all that stranded knitting so I’m choosing to leave the hat as is. It doesn’t look too bad this way.

Knitting resolution #3 took a hit with my recent sock yarn sale purchases.

In other knitting news….

I finally took the crochet cast on off and completed the beaded picot bind off . What kept putting me off was the fear of having completed all that beaded lace work only to drop a stitch and mess up what I had accomplished. I finally went through with it and the results are fantastic.

As usual Noro has produced a delightfully colorful yarn. Unfortunately this stuff gets twisted and tangled pretty easily. It’s not the most touchable yarn either. However it did soften up a bit when I washed it., especially once I added a bit of fabric softener to the soak. I can’t wait to have a sister sock for this one. It may take a bit longer since I want to try and match up the color stripes. One ball of this stuff goes a long way and if I wasn’t so concerned with matching the stripes I would probably have enough yarn left over from this skein to finish the second sock.

Sort of.......

My Ice Queen from knitty is mostly done though I will admit to not having picked up the provisional cast on to finish. It is still on the crochet chain. Someday I'll get around to it but for now it is still perfectly wearable as is.

My scarflette took less than 1 skein of my Manos stash to complete. I will hopefully have a matching mitt set soon.

My plastic tote for knitting tools died finally, it was poked one time to many with the crochet hook. I found this stackable containers at Target. I can carry around anywhere from 1 to 4 at a time. Sweetness.

For those of you who were at the last SnB and saw me messing with my camera you can now see the VIDEO version (35 seconds) anyway. My favorite part is the last line of the clip.

Ringing in the New Year

Just when I got used to writing 2007 instead of 2006 on documents they go and switch it up on me again.

Since I’m not one for new years resolutions that I can actually stick to in my regular life I’ll just stick to knitting resolutions. Any notion of loosing weight or eating healthy went out the window with the discovery of the Sprinkles Cupcake Store. ( I blame my mother who is a cupcake enabler).

1. Stop repeating the same patterns twice or more (except socks).
I’m certainly guilty of falling into a knitting rut. When I find a pattern I like I tend to knit it up in several variations. No more! I will try not to repeat anything twice except in the case of socks. Another exception will be the scarf and 2 masks I’ve already been tasked to make for friends and family but those came in before the resolution was made.

2. Finish at least 4 projects that I started in 2007.
My favorite part of knitting is the beginning when you swatch and cast on. Actually getting to the end is where the difficulties start for me. The top contenders are ( Ruby Red Slipper sock, Mr. Rogers’s Cardi, Print O’ the Wave shawl, Hexagon Bag, Deep V Vest and Lacey Cardi).

3. Use up a substantial part of my stash.
I spent so much time stash busting last year only to loose all my progress with some recent purchases. I was thinking about suggesting a yarn swap for SnB so that everyone can unload skeins they’ve already lost interest in. That and I need to make room for all the stuff I bought at a Boxing Day Sale and other sales.

Hopefully I’ll fulfill at least one of these resolutions. We will just have to wait and see what the new year holds for me.

I've decided to refer to this year as the Year of the UFO. So many projects started and so few of them with any real progress to them. Every time I thought I was getting back on track a new issue of Knitty would come out and everything would go to hell in a hand-basket.

Damn you Knitty! Your my cracksilk haze dealer.

I have at least a dozen projects started around this year and these are the ones I can remember starting. I'm to wary to to dig into my knitting basket to see what lurks there.

1st crochet hat - tried blocking for extra length but sadly I'll just have to buy a new skein to finish this one off.

Eunny Jang vest - This one broke my heart when I realized somewhere I'd twisted the stitches and a least an inch worth of work was going to be frogged.

VK lace cardigan - so close on this one to, I think I've got at least half of the pieces done.

Print O the Wave - Thank goodness for safety lines, I've had to rip sections so many times.

Ruby Red slipper sock - I finally tracked down enough beads to do the second one but I just never got there.

Fake Isle Hat - this just needs to have the top reknit. I'd just have to untangle the giant ball it has become since I've put it down.

Bzzzz Hat - Needs to be frogged and resized.

Green Varigated Odessa - I love this one but the beads are a little small for the yarn so I became a little discouraged with how many more I had to do. I will finish this one, hopefully before January.

Modular purse - I need to pick up more black wool for this one.

Clapotis - Love the colors but Christmas knitting was upon me.

Blue Cardigan - so soft but it's mostly stockinette. I will pick it up soon after the new year.

Wrestling mask - I need to do 2 of these, one for my bro and one as a gag gift for the dept holiday party.

Kidsilk stripes - Not 100% happy with this one but I've come to far to rip this yarn. It would be near impossible to do so even if I wanted to.

I've also have at least 5 projects I've promised friends and family but haven't really started. Boo!

Nothing Says Love Like "Serial Killer"

My sister was born the day after Halloween so it generally makes sense to get her a gift that she can use for the aforementioned holiday. Hence the "Jackyll & Hide" mask from Knitty.

I couldn't wear this mask for long to take pictures because wearing it made me claustrophobic. Little did I know that this shot I took (right before I ripped it off my head) would land me in the Flickr Explore Page. Sweet.

I've also mostly completed my crochet flower scarf. Just need to weave away the ends. You can also see my Pirate flag temp tat courtesy of the Texas state fair. Where else can I get my fix of fried alligator, fried cookie dough, and funnel cake? I'm going to miss it.

Hooking on the Streets

You can now find me hooking on street corners. Or at least on benches during my lunch break from work. I recently learned the art of crochet and have completed my very first project. I’d like to thank Petra for taking the time to show me what’s what with crochet.

I did the Stripes & Stripes scarf from Debbie Stoller’s “Happy Hooker” with Paton’s SWS yarn. I love how the color changes look with the pattern. Now I just need to find a saucy hat pattern to go with this.

I started this at the Knit Out but decided that it really would look better in multiple colors rather than just white. It made for excellent practice though.

This was a hat that I started but I may frog the thing. I’m not really feeling the bobble stitch despite how cute it looks in the pictures. I’ll let it stew awhile and revisit this later.

Free stuff! I won this lovely door prize at the KO&C2. Very nice.

A tiny little pink pimp coat for a very special Barbie. Hopefully I can get a picture of her wearing it because it’s pretty swank on her.

For my birthday a friend took me to the Ritz-Carlton for brunch and I was presented with a lovely bouquet of roses and a pregnant armadillo whom I named Armo. Watch as Armo’s baby pops out Alien-style.

Hat Madness .....Again

It's that time of the year again when I go a little Hat-Happy. I've finished 3 in a pretty short amount of time and I still have more in the works.

The first is a bucket hat that is basically the Topi from Knitty.com with a much bigger brim. I did it once with a garter stitch and hated how it looked so I did a knit brim with a turning ridge and knit the back part and folded it under. Just like the Topi cap brim.

Next is another Fake Isle hat with a lovely pink alpaca and a crazy fuschia/purple/pink combo.
I made the top to tight so I'm going to have to redo that portion.

Next is a Moss stitch beret. I ADORE the brim of this hat. I must use it again and again. You do a provisional cast on and fold it over. You then knit the provisional stitches with the live stiches and get a smooth brim.

I finished the Brea Bag for my Mom's birthday but I failed to get a picture of it. This is an in progress shot but you can get the basic idea of how it looked.

I feel like I've been working forever and getting nowhere with my progress. Mainly because I keep starting new and more complicated knitted objects.

Like my Ruby Red Slipper sock. It is based on the baby slipper from Frog In Knots but with my own added twists. It is an adult sized knee high sock with red beading on the instep. It is probably way more complicated then it needed to be but I did it anyway. After it is finished I plan on knitting a beaded bow to go on the tip of the sock.

You can see the beads a little better in this photo.

In other news I chopped off all my hair.

Knitting in Dallas

I don’t know how many Dallas knitters have seen this already but I thought it was cool. Normally when I’m out, I’ve got my invisible blinders on and ignore everything. I get hassled a lot so I’ve learned to adapt but at the same time, I accidentally end up blowing off friends when they try to get my attention. Sorry dude but I’m in Lauren-Land. I was downtown when I was about to walk past what I thought was someone on a park bench until the blue yarn caught my eye. It is a sculpture of a woman knitting. It is nicely detailed too. She’s got her handbag with a wallet and other random items as well as her knitting bag. I thought it was hilarious and I had to get her picture. Maybe one day I will go out there with her and knit awhile.

In the actual knitting category, I’ve been working on a bucket hat that I can wear during the hot Texas summer. I based this off of Topi from Knitty.com with a garter stitch brim. I’m not happy with it so I will keep working on it for a while. I think it’s the increases that are bothering me so it shouldn’t be that hard to fix.

I’ve also found a use for some gorgeous yarn that I picked up from the Shabby Sheep. I’m making the Berroco Brea bag in fuchsia colored Lopi yarn. I may decide to go back and double the yarn and knit on a larger sized needle so that I can get a larger purse.

I also picked up some Nashua worsted weight yarn in a purple/blue color. I’m trying to decide if I want to make the braided scarf from the last VK holiday issue or if I want to make a cabled scarf/hat combo. The color is so pretty I just want to roll around in it awhile.

I’ve also been working steadily on my Print o the wave shawl but that is slow going for now.

I've also gotten some new dinnerware courtesy of my Mom. They were a gift for my new apartment.

More than Meets the Eye

It’s been awhile since I posted notes on my knitting but I have been working on a few new things.

I promised my brother a Transformer hat months ago but it wasn’t until I saw the preview for the movie that I even remembered this. It only took about a day to knit and I think I’ll make one for myself with sparkly yarn.

Speaking of my brother, how hilarious is this picture he had taken of him and his baby boy Duke?
My Little Pony. (Saddle and booties not included.)

For Mothers Day I knit a Sophie Bag using Patons SWS yarn. The actually knitting was super easy but the felting did result in me giving myself a mild first degree burn on my hands. The things I do for my loved ones. I really like the shape of this bag and the twisted handles are very cute. I highly recommend it.

For my Dad I'm making a pair of socks from the WWII red cross pattern that is online. The pattern is wonderfully easy and knits up quickly.

For my in progress projects I’ve got to lace items in the works. I’ve got a lace cardigan from VK Holiday 2005 and a Print O the Wave shawl in a rich red.

More animal cuteness: My Dad found a guinea pig wandering around the yard back home. So adorable with its beady eyes and squeaky voice. He named it Caviar. Animals just seem to gravitate towards the house. Bunnies, turtles, and now guinea pigs.

Icarus Flying Free At Last

It took months of knitting and at least a half dozen false starts to get this thing done but it was all worth it. According to my knitting journal I started this on October 19, 2006 and I was done as of April 25th, 2007. To be fair I did put this project down for most of those months but it was still a time intensive project.

It was funny how my family didn’t seem to believe me when I said the shawl I was knitting would eventually look like the picture in the magazine. Even when I was done and I explained the whole idea of blocking they didn’t seem to buy it. It was the same way when I started with felting. I ended up pinning the shawl to a bed and steam blocking it with an iron.

I didn’t want to leave it out too long because my cat has a radar for things I don’t want her to lay down on. She won’t move all day except to eat and suddenly she’ll appear out of nowhere to roll on wool. I guess you have to find your jollies somewhere when your old, decrepit and evil.

The only mod I made was to use size 4 needles instead of 3. With only 8 rows left to go I ran out of the Grape Jelly color of Knitpicks I was using and I ended up having to use some blue I had to finish it off.

Another hat from me as well. I frogged another hat project to make this Newsboy cap.

Danica at Last!

Danica A.K.A. Winnie Cooper

I've been working on Danica since mid January and I finally completed it tonight. I can definitely see myself doing another one of these. Next time I think I want to do one in alternating solid and varigated colors. I have to say that the SWS worked wonderfully with this pattern and I love the colors. I used just over two skeins for this project along with leftover scraps from another.

In the picture, you can see what the scarf looked like before I blocked it. Not terrible, but still somewhat raggedy looking at the bottom. The other side is blocked courtesy of the steam feature on my iron.

***On a completely unrelated note, I successfully managed to give someone the Evil Eye the other day. I was about to get out of my vehicle when the person next to me hit my car with his door. He didn't even check to see if it was scratched, he just kept going like this is something he does with his SUV all the time. You can imagine my satisfaction when the first thing that happened when he pulled out was that he hit a concrete barrier behind him. If my windows had been rolled down, he would have heard me laughing. ***

All Scraps Must Go!

In my desk I keep a drawer for all the yarn scraps from the projects I've worked on. It's my goal for that drawer to be empty one day, instead of overflowing and getting stuck when I try to open it. To this end, I keep working my way through trying to find small projects that will suit them. I've managed to complete three more.

The first is a "Knecklace" from the Winter '05 issue of Knitty. Until I blocked it, I was sure I'd have to frog and untangle the yarn but a good steam helped shape it.

The next is my latest Calorimetry headband. I realized that if I was going to roll out of bed early enough on Saturday to catch the St. Patrick's Parade that passes by my apartment I might as well make something to wear. I forgot about it last year and woke up wondering who the hell was making that racket. When I opened my curtains and spotting the floats passing by it all became clear.

Finally, we have my Dreamswatch headband made from leftover Jaywalker socks yarn. I'd been working on this since I finished my socks but I kept getting bored and putting it down. I'd get a couple of pattern repeats done every few days but that was about as much effort as I could muster.

For those of you who are coming to the "Slap Stitch" Hockey Game on Sunday, what projects are you going to bring to work on? I'm a bit torn. I do want to keep working on my Danica scarf so that it will be done and out of the way but at the same time I want to do a project that requires very little of my attention. I guess I'll grab whatever I feel like as I head out my door.

Head Toppers

In my continuing efforts to work through my yarn, I’ve completed two small projects. The first is a Marsan cap for my Dad. I used some SWS in Natural Navy for his hat, omitting the periwinkle of course to keep it all manly.

I also knit a Tube hat for myself. This is basically a supa huge headband that can also be used as a cowl.

This little darling is a gift from my sister. It’s a pocket Goth doll that’s signed by one of her favorite singers, Voltaire.

A Jaywalker

After some trial and error I finally have a finished sock. I settled on doing a slightly longer version of the regular Jaywalker sock. I used Knitpicks Memories in "Fly Fishing".

I was doing some pretty crazy contortions trying to get a good picture of the finished sock. Not surprisingly it was kind of hard. This one is the best representation of the yarn color.

I think I may have enough yarn leftover from each skein to do a Calorimetry headband. I hate letting scraps go to waste.

Sock Question

Ladies of the sock, I have a question. Is it possible to do a provisional cast on for a sock, knit the thing, then go back to the top and use the rest of the skein knitting upwards? Just like the shrug portion of the Tubey sweater. That way you can use up the yarn but still get that nicer heel that I just can’t seem to achieve in a toe up sock. What are your thoughts?

I’ve been working on my second attempt at a toe up version of the Jaywalker but I’m not happy with the fit of it. The way the heel is currently shaping up gives it the appearance of the bottom of a footie pajama rather than a sock.

If I tried the provisional cast on it would probably only work in a stockinette portion, that way there will not be an obvious delineation between where the sock changes direction.

****Last night I attempted to make a Jaywalker sock work using this idea. Unfortunately I was right about this only working with stockinette stitches. When I tried knitting it the same way up as I did down the chevrons changed directions and caused the fabric to puff out. When I tried staggering the pattern so that they did go in the same direction the sock still didn’t look right. To do this you’d need something that looks the same no matter what direction you’re knitting. Since I’ve already ripped this yarn 6 or more times, I’m just going to take my chances with a regular Jaywalker sock and hope I don't run out. I’ll save this idea for next time I knit a sock.****

V-Day Carnage

I hope everyone is gorging themselves on chocolates and chalky tasting candy hearts. I know that is what I would like to be doing today. I finished this little homage to VDay less than a week ago. It was inspired by a post I saw on Craftster. I'm thinking about embroidering a little skull in the center of the heart. What do you guys think?

Yet another hat. I wanted to finish off my skein of Patons Merino and knit something that I didn't really have to pay attention to. Hence the Inside Out Chemo Hat from Headhuggers.org. I started this during the Super Bowl and its done already. I added the brim from SnBN Newsboy hat for a little something different. I also followed some Craftster mods for the top of the hat. Super quick and a nice way to keep up my stashbusting.

My greenery cable hat which I knit on size 9 needles rather than the called for size 6. I had to cut off the cables prematurely so I wouldn’t end up with a huge hat. It’s a pretty pattern and I can definitely see myself knitting it again.

Also completed is my Angel lace hat with some ribbing added at the bottom. This is an excellent stash-busting hat to use up left over balls of yarn. I cast on 80 sts on size 8’s to adjust for my adult sized head.

Finally, I have my fuchsia chullo hat. I really wanted an earflap hat and nothing was going to stop me from doing it. Even if it’s not all that attractive looking. All I needs is a big ass pom pom on top. If you’re going to do something fugly, you should go all the way. This was my own pattern that I made up as I went along.

I’ve already started on my second ball of SWS for the Danica scarf. I love this yarn and I think it works well for this pattern. This project also has let me hone my backwards knitting skills so that I don’t have to keep turning my work. I always appreciate that.

This is the first project from Domiknitrix that I’ve started working on. The snood hat was going pretty well but when I tried it on the size didn’t seem right. I was on gauge but I think I may start over again. I do love the sparkly gold color. It will match the shrug I made not too long ago.

This is some of the craziest looking yarn I’ve worked with. It is a mix of all sorts of novelty yarns like ribbon, fun fur, trellis, nubby, etc. This was the only way I could get it to knit up nicely. The colors are great in person and much softer than you’d expect. The project however is slow going. Yes, I am sporting some pink bunny Pjs.

I bought this sweater with the intention of frogging it and reknitting it into something fabulous.

This it what it looked like when you frog it. It’s a bunch of little threads rather than a ply of yarn. I thought I might have to scrap the whole idea. I wound up a small skein of it to wash and stretch out.

I was able to reknit the yarn but very carefully. I may have to just knit directly from the sweater as I’m taking it apart rather than undoing the whole thing. I think this may become an Irish Hiking scarf sometime in the future.

(I've been tagged again! I’m going to have to skip the tagging part simply because everyone I know has been tagged recently and I’d hate to make them do it all over again).

I rarely if ever have my curtains open. Maybe I’m paranoid because I live on the ground floor facing a parking lot so any Tom Dick or Harry could peer in. On the other hand, maybe it’s because sunlight is the natural enemy of creatures of the night such as Belle and I.

I tend to not store things in drawers because my mind literally operates under “out of sight, out of mind”. If it goes into a drawer, it might as well have been thrown into a black hole. Until I open the drawer up again some time later. Then it’s like finding a present under the tree Christmas morning.

You know that little voice in your head? The one that reminds you to pick up milk at the store or that you need to be somewhere at a certain time? Depending on what I’ve been watching or whom I’ve been talking to lately, it will sound like them rather than myself.

As I’ve gotten older, my speech impediments have gotten worse. Seriously, I didn’t use to sound like I’d been drinking all the time. I swear!

The only movies that have made me cry are “Somewhere in Time” and “Pet Cemetery”. I’m not sure what that says about me.

I used to be a bit of a bag lady. I still am a bit but nowhere near the way I used to be. I briefly earned the nickname “Mary Poppins” in high school because I could pull the most random stuff out from my satchel. Ask for it and chances were I had it. This came in handy from time to time.

It’s past two in the morning and this was all I could think up. I’m sure there are much worse things that people who know me well could tell you. Anyone who can think up one should post it in the comments below. Keep it clean people!

I recently received my Christmas Amazon.com books in the mail and I’m super excited. I’ve wanted the Vogue Stitchonary forever, DomiKnitrix has lots of patterns that I’d like to knit, and finally the Happy Hooker. I’m trying to work my way through HH but perhaps I’m letting it frustrate me too much. Throwing my hook on the rug is apparently not helpful in understanding single stitch crochet. Who knew?

My first for real sock. No worsted weight yarn, large needles or knit in a 2-needle pattern. For this I employed some actual sock yarn and dpns to make a lace creation. I like it so much I may even make another to have a matched pair. I’m just crazy like that At first I despaired over the idea of working with size 1 needles but I persisted and managed to finish at least one sock. I really like the greens and blues of this yarn but in the end I think this pattern may have looked better in a solid. I’ll have to keep that in mind for next time.

Also completed recently: A Calorimetry from knitty that was finished while watching a movie on TV. Some slight modifications because apparently the pattern was coming out huge for some people. I ended up only casting on 80 stitches instead of the called for 120.

A top down bonnet from helloyarn.com that took about day to make. I’m not sure how I feel about this hat but it did give me the opportunity to learn a figure 8 cast on so I think it was worth it.

What have I been up to? No good to say the least. Finally the holiday is past and I managed to complete all of my knitting goals with a bit extra.

Gifts Given - things I knit for the family.

Almost, but not quite = Project that didn’t turn out how I wanted them to so I passed on making them Christmas gifts. The brimmed hat was in danger of going flying at the first sign of wind. My brother got a London Beanie instead The colors for the Center Square hat weren’t working for me so I knit my dad a skull hat instead.

Crochet - I found out that my Great Grandmother, whom I never got to meet, was into crochet. Here is an exquisite doily done on super small hooks. Hooks that look like they were meant for eye surgery. I’ll make good use of them when my copy of the SnB Crochet arrives in the mail. Also I’m rocking a poncho that has been waiting for me in a closet since about 1972.

Finished and in Progress - Some finally finished objects along with mini projects. A tubey sweater I’ve been working on and off for the past year. A lace sock, a sparkly gold shrug, a hat, and finally the seem ingly endless My So Called Scarf.

Thanksgiving 2006

Nine hours in a car and this is what I have staring at me across the table at Thanksgiving. Nice. Thankfully the meal did not end in the same manner as “A Christmas Story”. This bloodhound managed to behave himself and not take off with the turkey. He did however stare forlornly at the food and the people eating it. He even had his own napkin so he didn’t drool on the tablecloth. Poor Duke, so sad. No pumpkin pie for you. Good food and lots of family though.

In knitting related news I have finished 2 new projects. However since they are destined to be gifts during the holiday season the pictures will not be posted for awhile. I’d just like to say now for the record that they are quite nice. Snazzy even.

I also picked up a few new needles at the holiday sales. The local craft store in the Rio Grande had their double pointed needles half price. I picked up sizes 0-4 for less than $1.50 each. Love it. This will of course allow me to make a real pair of socks eventually. No more doing them on chunky needles with worsted weight yarn. Soon I will be indoctrinated into the Cult O Socks. I fear they may be my downfall.

Missing in Action

I'm sorry I haven't responded to a lot of messages I've gotten lately. I've been off in Lauren-Land and that can be a spooky place sometimes. Mr. Matt can attest to this. It's basically Halloween there all year long. I've been in and out and a bit hard to reach.

In the world of knitting I've completed 2 small projects. I finally managed to complete the task of making a set of armwarmers that I actually like. I also finished an Amelia Aviator hat to go with it. Rounding out this trio is my Good Ole Cable scarf that I finished ages ago. It has been more than a year since I won a gift certificate to the Shabby Sheep for $25 dollars and I ended up with 5 skeins of some lovely Suri Merino. I wanted to make a hat/scarf/armwarmer set and it has taken me this long to complete that goal. Oddly enough I still have 1.5 skeins left over so I may make an alternate hat to go with the set.

I've also made some serious progress with my Icarus shawl. I'm almost done with the main body repeats and yet I'm still only on the first skein of Knitpicks Shadow. For less than $3 dollars a skein this is working out to be quite an inexpensive shawl. Sweet.

Yay Skulls!

Yay skulls! This is some of my progress on the double knit scarf I've got in the works. I think its deliciously evil. Save the warm fuzzies for some other family. This is just how we do it. Eventually this scarf will be for my sister but DK is super slow and tedious so it may end up being a Christmas gift.

In the meantime I've got other projects to break up the boredom. I redid the armwarmer I knit sometime back and I'm very pleased with the result. It may not be the super prettiest pattern but it is soooo very comfortable to wear. All I need now is to knit its sibling.

Also I've started work on the IK Icarus shawl in Knit Picks Shadow. I've had to restart this bad boy about 6 or 7 times. I don't know what the issue is but I manage to seriously screw up really simple lace. I do love the color though so I will continue on for however long it may take. I was so excited when I finished 20 rows and was able to put in a floss lifeline.

Lotus Blossom Top

Yay! It’s done. I’m all boob-tastic in my spiffy new Lotus Blossom Top. I’m pretty psyched about it too. Towards the end I really had some doubts about how it was turning out. I kept trying it on with the thought "I can fix this later if I have to". Blocking helped enormously.

Yarn: Knitpicks Merino Style in “Frost” on size 7 and 8 needles.

Modifications: I didn’t switch needle sizes until the decreases and I added a row of YO, K2Tog for the ribbon to go through. Otherwise, I followed the pattern to the letter. I also tried steam blocking this time instead of my usual wet blocking odyssey.

Double knitting and the Lotus Top

This is my first halfway decent attempt at a double knit. Many of the previous swatches I did ended in disaster and will never see the light of day.

It's a bit messy, tension varies throughout, and the cast on/off methods I used probably were not the ones called for. I couldn't find a clear picture of what I should do so I just guessed. I was all excited because the latest issue of Knitty had some pictures of double knitting but as I soon found out that only worked if you wanted 2 seperate but identical pieces.

Hopefully I can improve rapidly because I realized my sisters birthday is coming up and this scarf would be fantastic in purple and black.

On another knitting front I've been working on my Lotus Blossom Top. I've come to realize that, as others have noted before, the lace reapeats really do look like alien heads. Weird. I think someone on the KAL had the idea to switch out that lace and use a skull pattern instead. I hope someone does do that because it would be brilliant.

I've had the yarn for months but only now do I find the will to work on it. I plan on doing some minor alterations to the pattern along the way so hopefully it will fit the way I want it to. We shall see soon.

Purple Loving Freak

After feeling some serious hat making/stash busting burnout I decided to settle down and focus on one larger project. Here is the result.

This is a variation of the VK Fall 06 Fair Isle U-Neck Pullover. Of course I omitted the Fair Isle portion as well as the sleeves to turn this into a purplicious vest.

This was knit out of Caron Simply Soft in purple and took less than 2.5 skeins. I liked this pattern and I can definitely see myself doing another. Only next time I won’t skip the sleeves or the multicolors.

For some reason I seemed to have accumulated many skeins of this particular color over a long period of time without realizing it. So of course you will probably see matching accessories to go with the purple vest very soon. I’ll look like Grimace in no time.

I can’t believe I almost missed it. It’s around 3 a.m. on the 16th and I just learned that today is the DFW Knit Out and Crochet Too at Half Price books. I went last year and won a nifty door prize for free yarn. I just can’t turn that down. It will also give me a chance to off load some of my stash busting hats to charity. It's from 10 till 6 but there is no guarantee I'll be there before noon. Despite the fact that I'm walking distance from the place.

I went road tripping with my Dad and got back into town a few days ago. All that driving gave me plenty of time to put a nice dent in my sweater project. It’s a variation of a VK sweater from its latest issue. I hope to be done with it very soon. It will also be my first opportunity to work with my first set of Addi Turbo needles. Sweet. I’ve completed the back and I am in the process of finishing up the front.

You know you’ve been knitting too much when you start having weird dreams about knitting. I’ve had a few before mostly involving really bizarre looking sweaters but the other night I seemed preoccupied with argyle. I’ve never knit it but when I woke up I felt compelled to note them just in case I ever try. Here was what I did.

Stash of Doom

My sister jokes that there must be a bear somewhere in our family tree because of the way we sleep. We basically hibernate anytime anywhere. I’m of the opinion that there is a squirrel mixed in there too. We have problems letting things go. We allow things to simply pile up in dusty corners even if we don’t need them. Instead of nuts for a long winter I’ve got yarn all over my apartment.

I decided to go through most of them to figure out what it is that I’m up against. What I found terrified me. Behold the stash!

Damn.

So far I’ve broken this up into three categories: stuff to give away, scraps, and keepers.

I doubt Goodwill would appreciate me tossing a box of yarn out my car as I speed away. A drive by yarning just isn’t practical. I intend to find a group that might want it. I’ll look and see what I can find for that.

Before I move on to any big projects I want to work my way through the bits of scraps I have. Stuff just left over from other knitted objects. Maybe just enough to make a simple hat or headband. Stuff that I can knit and give away. So far I’ve completed 2 stash hats. The 3 Flower Hat and a Star Wars Beanie. The storm trooper chart can be found here.

Pretty in Pink (and Pimpin')

Finally, some progress! Occasionally there are knitting projects that seem to go on forever and this is one of them. Unfortunately I’ve only completed one of two sleeves. I really wanted this to have some sleeves so I played around to see what I could do. This is my second attempt at doing the sleeves. The first came out too tight but this seems to have worked out well. Now all I have to do is start another sleeve. Nothing but knit stitches as far as the eye can see. This could take awhile.

For those of you who love Project Runway as much as I do you may enjoy this. It’s a website that takes screen captions from the show and adds their own hilarious commentary. Here is an example. I love it.

In my last post I made mention of a furry pink pimp coat and here it is. The model wearing it is my good friend Matt.

A bit of backstory on this picture. When I lived in the dormitory at school and there would be various activities for the residents to participate in during the year. This picture was taken at the 2nd Annual SMU Fine Arts Drag Show. In the first year they just had the residents performing. The second year we called in the professionals since we had quite a few in the theater and dance programs at school. Despite not being front and center like the previous year we decided to dress up for the occasion. I wore a very saucy top that I would flash at people when my cardigan wasn’t buttoned up. Matt being the more conservative of the two of us had to raid my wardrobe for something he felt was appropriate. Hence the pink pimp coat. I was very proud when I found out later that one of the performers wanted to rip it off of Matt and take it home.

Topi Part Deux

Even though it basically looks the same as my first Topi I really like this one more. My second version was done in cotton yarn on size 4 needles and is much more likely to get used sometime this summer. Yay! A practical accessory.

I did most of this while visiting my sister and mother again this weekend. I really wanted to go to the Stitch n Pitch but family comes first. I'll be honest though, 2 things might have prevented me from coming anyway. 1: The heat 2: My propensity to get lost while driving. I was born with no sense of direction. Hell even left versus right trips me up occasionally.

I gave my mom the bag I made for her friend and she got me this funky purse. I like crazy wrestling masks and this bag just compliments my ever growing collection of Mexican folk art so wonderfully. It looks insane but then so do many other things that I own. I should start photographing the more nutty things in my closet. My pink pimp coat doesn't get displayed nearly as often as it should.

Red White & Blue

Here are two of my recently completed projects. They look a little matchy-matchy but one is not meant for me. I did a second "Letter Have It" tote from the Stitch N Bitch Nation at the request of my Mom. She wanted one for her friend in a red/white/blue combo which I acheived through Kool Aid. The colors look just like the Bomb Pop icecream I loved as a kid.

The second project was a very quick knit. The Topi Ha t from Knitty. I was able to knit this in just over a day. It was fun but I wished I had used a nicer yarn. I just knit it in some acrylic I had deep in the stash and it was a bit scratchy. I'll know for the next time.

Short Row Noro

Mmmmmm, I just love this Noro colorway. I’d rub my face in it if I wasn’t pretty sure I’d give myself a splinter of some sort. I’m always pulling some sort of twig or fluff out of that lovely wool.

This is from Magknits. After awhile you don’t even have to follow the pattern anymore you can see where it’s going and just know what your supposed to do. If anyone wants to try this scarf there is a tiny misprint in the pattern. On the 12th row of the first section it’s supposed to be knit to the end not purl.

Now if it would only cool down so that I could wear this. That won’t happen for another 4 months or so. According to the online weather report we are looking at a temperature of 106 degrees tomorrow. 106!!! I may cry. That’s about a week now with triple digit temps. I wonder what my apartment complex’s stance is on inflatable kiddie pools on our porches. I may have to find out soon. I can knit and wet block at the same time if I do.

In the meantime I'll be huddled indoors avoiding the sun and watching my Netflix discs of Cracker and Alias.

Razor Top

A shot of my mostly completed Razor Cami top. This was done with 2 skeins of Knitpicks palette in blush. Total cost of this project was $3.58 and you just can't beat that. There were some adjustments to be made since the pattern is for a smaller bust and as a result of my enlarging the body size the straps are pretty much in my armpits. Next time I'll know to adjust and make the front smaller. Eventually I plan to go back and make the straps cross in the back so there won't be a constant adjusting.

Coming soon though is another felted "Letter Have it" tote that my Mom requested for her friend. I've already dyed the yarn now I'm waiting for it to dry out.

Saturday Special

The Saturday Market Bag is finished. Another check mark on my “To Do List” of knitting. Sweet.

It was an easy knit despite the 4 false starts I had. Inevitably with lace if you don’t use safety lines your going to screw up and have to frog the whole thing. After awhile it got to be ridiculous so I put in the lines and had no trouble from then on. When I finished one side of the bag I was mildly concerned that it wouldn’t be big enough so I added an extra set of lace repeats to each side. I shouldn’t have worried because the tote stretches out even when it looks like it won’t. I was able to fit 10 skeins of yarn into the bag easily. The holes are not too big so as long as I’m not storing straight needles or pens inside of it I should be good to go.

Yarn: Sugar and Cream in “Summer Splash”. The bag took less than 2 skeins even with the extra repeats.

Headline News

After a few days of knitting I finally broke down. I am simply incapable of being a one project girl. As a result of this meltdown I was compelled to start something different. I took a break from finishing my father's day gift and started/completed a hat. My ever trusty Netflix supplied me with a marathon of Alias episodes for my viewing pleasure so while watching them I cast on and knit the SnBN newsboy. Huzzah!

In other news my kitty has made it her life's mission to knock everything off of any available surface so that she can nap on it. She cleared a coffee table, a chair, and part of my desk all in an effort to stretch out. I may as well be living with a dog the way she's going.

Present and Future Works in Progress

Some of my current knitting. I need to end my habit of beginning new projects long before I've finished the ones I am working on.

Right now, I have four active projects and countless nonnative ones rotting in a yarn pile somewhere. The top one is my Tubey sweater; it is the closest to completion of all my wip’s. Next is my lacy scarf that will eventually be done someday. Perhaps some day after that I may even properly block the thing. Who knows? My rainbow yarn project is being made into a mosaic bag that will be just big enough to carry the essentials: wallet, keys, phone, lip-gloss, and taser. My final project is my Father’s day gift but that will not be described or pictured here just in case Dad is reading this.

I promised myself that I would not start another project until after I have completed at least one of the former ones listed here. As soon as they are I already have 4 projects lined up. First is a modular scarf made out of some fantastic Noro that I picked up and is pictured below.

After that comes the new Magknits Market bag, SnBN Newsboy cap, and Knitty Topi out of yarns I picked up while in the Rio Grande.

Rainbow Delight

After picking up about 30 or so packets of koolaid at the store I've been agonizing awhile over color combos and potential projects. Erica suggested rainbow colors because pride week is coming up and I've got to rep my friends. When my project is done I'll post it here.

I also really like the idea because no one ever suspects the quite girl with the rainbow colored purse or scarf of wrongdoing. Muhahahaha! Suckers! Maybe I'll knit a rainbow colored Taser cozy.

After a few weeks to mull over what I wanted to do with this sweater I’ve decided to soldier on. The super deep v-neck has grown on me. It may be far sluttier than I’d intended but I still like it. It shouldn’t take long to finish the body and the sleeves. The yarn is light enough that I may even get to wear it outside soon.

Whoretastic Sweater WIP

Whoo-hoo! I’m back! Finally. It was only a couple of days back home but the drive alone makes it feel like a couple of weeks. I survived my sojourn to the Rio Grande Valley to baby-sit Grandma and the menagerie of animals at the house while the parents were living it up in Las Vegas with Luis Miguel. At least I had digital cable, Degrassi, and super fast internet to give me comfort. Sadly no liquor runs to Mexico so I feel gypped.

I know I said I wanted my sweater to be kinda slutty but this is ridiculous. If I keep going at this rate the sweater won’t join until it hits my navel. Somewhere along the way my girls grew about 2 inches without my knowledge and it threw off my calculations. I guess I’ll just have to frog it and readjust my gauge. When I’m done though it will be a fantastically soft and fluffy sweater. I had hoped to finish this project when I went home for Easter but it just didn’t work out like that. Instead I made some headway into my second Tubey sweater. I’m using the frogged magenta lamb’s pride from the previous post.

Now here’s some cuteness from my trip and they aren’t even all the ones at my folks house…..

I've spent months trying to destash and I've been moderately successful. The problem with using up the yarn you already have is that you always want to use the best stuff first. And when that happens all your left with is some craptacular acrylic that you just know is going to rot forever in a corner. My new goal is to take items that I've already knitted and frog them. We all have knitted items that just don't turn out how we'd hoped or just did not look flattering on a human body. Most of these items are made of nice yarn that shouldn't go to waste on something fugly. I’ve already ripped two projects and I already have grand plans for them.

Striped Delight

My recently completed striped felted knitting tote. I really do love this bag. It’s not too big but it is deep enough that things are not poking out of the top. I was surprised at the lack of fuzzing on the bag after it felted. On other projects I’ve had to take a shaver to the finished item but that wasn’t necessary here. I also tried adding some color twisted handles. If I ever try that again I’ll either twist them tighter or just wait until after the felting process to do the twisting. It only took 1 spin in the washing machine to finish the felting process and at the end the bag had shrunk from a height of 23 inches to 14 inches. The width decreased from 14” to 11.5”.

Halley Comet strikes again

There is nothing quite like the smell of wet wool. Mmmmmm, musty. At least in my mind I can associate it with a finished object drying in my bathroom.

I completed my 3rd Halley hat today. A completion that almost didn’t happen. This particular version was done using a partial leftover skein from my Blackberry sweater. It was knit over the course of 2 movie/TV nights at Erica’s which P.S. if you haven‘t been watching Veronica Mars on UPN than you are missing out and I feel nothing but pity and contempt for you. With about 15 stitches left to bind off last night I ran out of yarn. Sonofabitch! Normally I would have simply undone some of the work and left it a row shorter but I had already omitted much of the bottom part because I knew I wouldn’t have much more material to work with. Luckily I was able to cannibalize some yarn scraps from my sweater project to finish this one.

When it was finally off the needles it was very obvious that the only way this was going to fit on my x-large sized head was through the miracle of blocking. During the blocking process I managed to drop an open bottle of woolite onto the floor of my bathroom but with some time, patience, and a roll of paper towels I was able to rectify some of the damage. At least I will have a fun hat to wear on warm days. Yay.

I can’t believe that it’s been raining for almost 24 straight hours. This is Texas people!! Wait 5 minutes and the weather changes, or at least that is how its supposed to be. I can’t even make myself go to the store to get food. So instead I finished the Hello Kittyville hat that has been in progress for awhile now. I just popped in some DVD’s for a little Adam Baldwin /Vincent D’Onofrio action and the time just flew on by.

I made this hat with my sister in mind. As much as I adore a bit of the kitty she is truly the Hello Kitty lover. I used some Red Heart super saver yarn for the white portion so there is plenty leftover. I may just make a few more of these with different colored bows for different days of the week. We will just have to see.

I was a little worried that I may have overdone it with the pom-poms because they are just about the size of my fist. I hate yarn waste though so I wasn’t about to make a smaller pair only to have the one lone pom just sitting on a shelf somewhere. If a person isn’t careful though it they could take out an eye. Or choke them if they wrap around the neck. My next step is to include a warning on the label. Death by Kitty. Nice.

The Panta Files

I hadn’t actually thought about it but Erica did point out to me that the amount of knitting I do really isn’t reflected in the content of my site. I tend to only post the big stuff here but only if I remember to do so. The link on the right of the screen titled “My Knitting Photo Album” is much more comprehensive and up to date. Probably cause I’m a lazy ho and all I have to do is upload the photos with little effort. That’s just the way I roll.

Craftster has again sucked me into its vortex and forced me to drop what I was doing and make this item not once but twice. Thankfully this is basically an instant gratification project and they were completed in a day or two.

My first go at it was with my left over Noro yarn from Tubey. The colors worked out wonderfully in this pattern so of course I had to go and do it again.

The second time around I decided to be slightly more creative and I knitted up the Panta with plain white LB Fisherman’s wool. After it was done I used Kool Aid to dye the object in a reddish-pink color way. I used overlaps of Pink Lemonade, Strawberry, and Black Cherry to get the job done.

One of the problems with the pattern, through no fault of the designers, is the fact that pulling on a headband is hard to do when you have an abnormally large head. Just as I was finishing up the second headband someone posted the idea of using buttons as fasteners so you wouldn’t have to pull it on over you head. Brilliant! I could kiss that person. I just so happened to have a couple of snap closures that worked out fantastically.

Booby Galore

Never let it be said that I don’t like showing off the girls around town, or at the very least in my knitting circle. This modified little number took 6 days to knit and just over 2 skeins of LB wool ease make. I skipped the puffy sleeves part by only doing the increases before and after the stitch markers. For a bit of variety I can pin up the top and make it into a keyhole sweater. Fabulous.

Pirates Arrgh Cool

I used 2 skins of Lopi yarn to make my nifty new knitting bag. I had purchased the pink yarn at a yarn sale and I dyed some of it red with Kool Aid for a nice contrasting color. A Violent Valentine just for me! I did like the original version of the Tote found at hello yarn but something about the skull chart I found on Flickr just called to me.

Two notes I had about this project: I wish I had just a little bit more yarn so I could have made the bag longer. I’d suggest buying 3 skeins just to be on the safe side. Of course that had to do with me using the 2 to do the chart instead of having a separate skein of contrasting color. Another is that Lopi sheds like a mofo in the washing machine so use a pillowcase.

Whoo-hoo! Not only is Tubey done but it is actually chillly enough outside to wear it. I was afraid that as soon as I was done the temperature would be up into the 70's, which it was, but now it is down again.

I used Lion Brand Wool Ease for the main body color and Noro for the stripes. With the color I had leftover I made a removable corsage of flowers to add some flair.

This was a really easy knit and I can definately see myself doing another Tubey sometime in the future. Next time though it will be a solid color like cranberry.

I origionally purchased this yarn with no paticular project in mind. It's a nice inexpensive cotton that I've used before called Sinfonia.

The yarn is not self striping but does seem to work out with amazing pooling sometimes. This just happens to be an extreme case of that. One person noted that it looked like ink-blot argyle and they weren't wrong.

My First Sweater -- Old Project

I still have a lot of things to unpack after moving and while I was going through some boxes I found the first real sweater I ever made. Though the picture is good it is also deceiving. From the amount of cat hair that was coating it I think Belle had been nesting in it at some point and I just didn’t notice.

Looking at it now I can see so much of what I hadn’t learned yet. This was made before I knew the importance of things like gauge and finding out what is an appropriate substitution for the yarn the pattern calls for. The yarn was too thin and it has the result of making the sweater see-through under light. I also did not know how to attach the sleeves properly, sleeves which just happen to be about 8 inches too long.

I look at this monstrous creation and think “Damn, I’ve come a hell of a long way”. I’ve still got plenty to go but its nice to know some things have improved. This sweater will never be worn out in public but at least it is comfy enough for at home use.

The pattern is the “Big Sack Sweater” from Stitch n Bitch and made from Lion Brand wool-ease.

Ok, I’ve been tagged by Nanc to write about 5 things that are weird about me. I’ve chosen to write about 5 things that I think are relatively normal but have garnered many comments from the peanut gallery over the years. I’m also supposed to tag 5 people but unfortunately all the ones I know have either been tagged recently or don’t like to do these sorts of things like I do. If and when I get someone to agree I’ll add their names. Here it goes:

1) I love to watch TV with the captions on. You can always tell if I’ve been watching television because often times I would forget to change it back. In college they thought that this was very strange but I like to read what is going on. I tend to miss things when people talk at once so I need this.

2) My room is like a bat cave. I can’t stand light coming in, it’s the vampire in me I guess. I like waking up and not knowing if the clock means 11 A.M. or 11 P.M. My sister is the same way though. She says if she lived in a more ghetto neighborhood she’d have aluminum on the windows. I would be right there with her.

3) I’m a twitchy little squirrel, even more so in private. I try to control it when I’m out in public but sometimes my leg will shake if I’m not paying attention. Instead I choose to store it all up and wait till I’m home. Then I can pace around and do a tap dance if I like to get it out of my system. The cat finds this highly entertaining and likes to lay down along my walking path.

4) I’m a serious pack rat. Only used it once? May need it in case of an unforeseen event? Keep it I say! Let it rot in the closet forever. When I die they’ll wonder at all the crap I have. Old cords, buttons, pens, and Popples, I’ve got it all. I just don’t need any of it.

5)Those books: Worst Case Scenarios? Hilarious and informative because that is stuff I really do think about. What should I do if an alligator tries to eat me? What is the best way to hot wire a car? This is the stuff that keeps me up at night for no particular reason. The publishing of these books and the advent of the internet has helped answer many of my burning questions.

Third time is the charm. Not too tight around the neck and not too short in the sleeves. Made from Bernat Lana yarn in black and based on the devilish shrug from Craftster. I'm hoping to make the hood at a later time because I don't think I have enough yarn just yet. It's great to wear when it isn't chilly enough for a jacket but you don't want to be without a little something for warmth.

Hats Galore

Four recently and not so recently complted hats. The first two are Halley Comet hats from Marnie MacLean. The swirly colored one is my first attempt at multiple color KoolAid dye. The second replaces the patterns 1x1 rib and roll brim with a seed stitch. The bottome left is my Mary Jane Pithy Hat and the last is my Magknits Tam hat. Now that it is nice and chilly outside I hope to get some usage out of these. I'll just have to wear the lacey ones over my wig on the nippy days.

4th Time's the Charm

My 4th Lelah and probably my best. The pooling stripes at the bottom was a happy accident. I had origionally intended to make a Lelah with capped sleeves but I couldn't get it to look just right so I elimnated that idea. Maybe someone else can be the one to do that. Instead I may use the yarn I have left to make a matching caplet.

This top took 2 skeins of Sinfonia in "Matizado Azules" and I had just enough left to sew the elastic in. I used size 5 and 8 needles.

Reversible Caplet

Two shots of the same caplet. The pattern is reversible to wear so you can do as you please. This only took 2 days to make and was very easy. I used some JoAnn Brand yarn called "Dolcetto" in pink, it took less then 2 skeins to make. Super cute.

More Halloween Gear

I was so inspired by all the other Yorick scarves I'd seen on the internet that I just had to go and make my own. It took about 2.5 days to make. I felted this in my sink rather than in the washing machine and I think the results were quite nice. I need to trim poor yorick's eyes a bit but he's otherwise ready for Halloween.

The bag is a little something I made for my mother and sister. The pattern is from Lion Brand website and the orange and green parts are white wool dyed with koolaid. I wish I could wear skulls and pumpkins all year long.

Poor Duke, how we impugn your manliness with such items.

Here is my brother's bloodhound modeling the lion mane I made him for Halloween. I'm still waiting on my brother to send a clearer shot that shows the mane, the outfit, and the pompom tail that attaches to the dog's real tail.

I winged the outfit he wears but the headpiece is based on the "Coif" hat on Knitty. I added loops as often as I felt the need and then knitted some ears to sew onto it. The whole getup is made from Caron Perfect Match in yellow and brown.

Let us hope that Duke doesn't get laughed off the block by the other dogs come Halloween.

It has been awhile since I had a finished object but to be fair I have 6 projects on the needles not including the 2 I just finished. I also have a number of projects planned for the yarn still left in my stash. The shrug is made from a clearance sale yarn that I got at Michael's about a year ago. It is a green acrylic with silver sparkles in it and I think it might be Caron brand. It's color appeals to the inner Slytherin in me. I based the pattern from a "devlish shrug" on Craftster. Minus the hood and horns though. Next time I'll either have to make the neckhole bigger or make it with a hook or snap closing in the front to accomadate my gigantic sized head.

My second foray into felting. When I finished the hat was over a foot long and fit over my head like a ski mask. I contemplated either A: Felting it or B: Cutting out eyeholes and starting a life of crime. I went with the hat and this is my result. You never leave the house thinking that your going to see something crazy happen. I certainly don’t think that unless I’m going out clubbing somewhere and that is when I hope it will happen.

The SnB started off normally enough, people settling in and getting their snacks to nosh on. It was seemingly average meeting so far, dare I say even sedate. The day quickly changed and will probably be referred to often enough in the future as the SnB with the ass kicking. We were all sitting around knitting and crocheting our individual projects when I suddenly realize there is a commotion at the other end of the table and everyone is looking out the window. Being the curious little monkey that I am I want to see whatever it is that is going on outside. What do I see? Four guys beating the ever lovin’ bejeezus out of some guy behind the dumpster! Not just punching as is usual in a fight but holding this guy face down on the floor while they stomp his head. What in the hell?

Quite a few of the ladies in the group whip out their cell phones to call the police while a couple go to alert the staff what is going on. Almost every time we go to this café there are at least 2 or 3 po-po hanging around having lunch and on this date there was nary a one to be seen. Even the staff was wondering where they were. I’m not sure how long the beating when on for but it seemed to be awhile. A man who worked at the café went outside to see what he could do but a 4 against 1 was not a good thing. I give him props for even going and yelling at them. I on the other hand whipped out my disposable camera to get a picture of these guys in case they took off before the cops got there. Finally the authorizes arrive and the fight is broken up.

From what I could understand they man on the ground had stolen something from one of the other men and they had chased him down. I can understand chasing down a thief and calling the cops but splitting the guys head open? A bit intense. An all around interesting day.

Whoo-hoo! I finished this sweater in a new record time for me, 5 days. The pattern is based on the Knitty.com Lite Brite sweater with a few alterations. There was some blocking as well to make sleeves longer and prevent the body of the sweater from rolling up. Now all that is left is to weave away all the loose threads that are in the sweater. That is the part I hate most.

I had origionally envisioned the striped part of the sweater with only green and pink but I kept having flashbacks of the show "Muppet Babies" and the nanny whose legs were the only part of her you ever saw.

Thus far I have been strong and resisted the urge to buy new yarn. Instead I have been going through my stash and taking inventory of what I do have and what I could make it into. When I see just how much is squirreled away it is kind of scary. They need more support groups for yarn addicts.

I swear by all that is dark and unholy that from this day hence I will resist the temptation of buying new yarn. So Mom, don't call me when there is a sale at Michael's craft store. Here is the completed Loopy and Luscious scarf from Knitty.com. This was actually the very first pattern that I ever saw on knitty and it has always been in the back of my mind. It is soft, fluffy, and whimsical. Everything a scarf should be. I made it in Berroco Hip Hop "Way Cool" and Kidsilk Haze "Jelly". According to Erica all I need now is my wig, a long cigarette holder and a dark smoky club to complete my vision. Saucy and Crazy is just what I'm lookin for.

I know it's a little late but here is my Rainbow pride scarf. I've had quite a bit of time to complete a lot of knitting. What started as a 4-5 day visit home has become a near 3 week odyssey here in South Texas. First the hurricane delayed me, then a visit from some Great Aunts, now I'm keeping down the fort and an eye on my Grandmother while my parents are off traveling. It's like the episode of the Twilight Zone where people cannot leave a town until the jukebox let's them. Only it is my parents word keeping me here. Damn me and my spirit of familial responsibility.

Do not adjust your screen. The picture isn't dark, I actually managed a tan. Today we returned from a second trip to the beach. Even more impressive? The fact that we convinced my grandmother and my great aunt to join us at South Padre. No one could believe that they had left the house without being threatened with bodily harm. To pass some of the time I knitted a matching scarf to go with my fraggle hat. I had never knitted a scarf with vertical stripes on circular needles so I greatly overestimated how many stitches to cast on. The scarf ended up being over 12 ft long. At least it only took 2 days to knit.
